Not the Kimberleys, too

Adventure travels of late have had their bittersweet moments. A trip to Kilimanjaro was brought on due to the fact that its snow peaks are melting, exploring around Angkor Wat is filled with signs of sponsored excavation projects and even a proposal for a light show among the temples, and when trekking along the Inca trail we were told by our guide that the world is our toilet.

So imagine my frustration when just after booking our campervan holiday through the Kimberleys, I open the Sydney Morning Herald and see a feature story about a proposed gas processing plant. 44 sites have been considered and as of December 2008, three sites are still under consideration. And it looks like the government is pushing ahead with James Price Point and threatening compulsary purchase of the area.

Maybe I'm just getting older and becoming more aware of my surroundings and starting to feel a bit responsible for my actions. Or maybe through my travels, I've seen first hand that in the name of human advancement, we are doing very serious damage to the planet.

Luckily, others are much further along than me in this thinking. Check out the sites below.
